Serenata per tre violoncelli
One of Penderecki’s most personal pieces, the Serenata was a birthday present for his wife, Elżbieta. During her birthday reception in Kraków, it was premiered by Arto Noras, Ivan Monighetti and Andrzej Bauer, friends of the family. The piece has not been commercially recorded. Still, the composer decided to publish the score, which reveals that the Serenata poses a serious though admirable challenge for potential interpreters and may provide genuine aesthetic satisfaction to its audience. We can hope that this intimate declaration of conjugal love, drawing on the oldest functional forms of the musical genre developing since the Middle Ages, may begin its successful life on the concert stage. It was performed in Finland in July 2013 (Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival) at a concert including nighttime serenades by Mozart, Schubert, Respighi, Nielsen, Wolf, Prokofiev and Rachmaninov.
