Ciaccona per violino e viola (cello)

Penderecki transcribed his Chaconne in memoriam Giovanni Paolo II in 2009 for two solo instruments – violin and viola. It was first performed in this version in Dubrovnik, Croatia, by Janine Jansen and Julian Rachlin. The masterful instrumental parts are extremely elaborate, and the piercing main lamentation is exposed in different registers against the backdrop of a constant harmonic formula. The orchestral version, performed in the context of the Polish Requiem, functions in the cycle as a “brightening up”, coming “out of the thicket into a sunlit clearing”, as the composer explained in an interview with Dorota Szwarcman. His transcription of the piece is a self-contained, independent artistic statement: subtle and virtuosic, filled with emotions of a genuinely Romantic kind.
