Witold Lutosławski
Witold Lutosławski is undoubtedly one of the greatest composers of the 20th century. To many, he was a role model both as a man and as an artist; his music remains a perfect example of “contemporary classical style”. Lutosławski’s work from the period spanning 1957–1994 provide answers to the most important problems faced by the contemporary art of composition – those associated with harmony, melody, and form. Lutosławski solved these problems, developing the main elements of his style: twelve-note harmony, controlled aleatoricism, two-part form and “thin textures”. At the same time, he was able to produce a perfect blend of intellectual psychological calculation with the emotional content of his work. His answers to the above formal problems are striking in their ingenuity, elegance, and sophistication; their importance to contemporary music cannot be overstated.
