Valentine Piece op. 70
Recording not available.
Valentine Piece for flute and little bell is a 5-minute miniature – a musical gift for the famous U.S. flutist Carol Wincenc, who had commissioned Górecki to write the Concerto-Cantata. The composer drafted this piece on a serviette in a New York restaurant where he met Wincenc in 1995 during his visit to that city. As the flutist recalled: “On the napkin, he wrote the notes C and A, which form the first two letters of my name – Carol. These two sounds recur in this personal ‘Valentine’ until we hear a little bell ringing to announce the end of the piece”. The score was prepared on 1 February 1996 in Katowice. Wincenc still eagerly performs this piece as an encore, even though – just like the earlier Concerto – it is not a virtuoso showpiece, but a quiet, contemplative work of rather cheerful character, enhanced by the charming, frequently repeated ”bird motif”.
