Three Songs to words by Maria Konopnicka op. 68
After a long interval, Górecki returned to Maria Konopnicka’s poetry in 1995, when he composed By My Little Window for voice and piano. Together with his two early settings of Konopnicka’s poems Through These Meadows, Across These Fields and When Poland, it became part of a new cycle of Three Songs, performed as a whole on 28 May 1995 in New York City by baritone Andrzej Bachleda accompanied by the composer on piano. As in the case of Górecki’s other solo songs, the piano accompaniment, simple and economical, aims to support the melodic line and enhance the textual meanings. Górecki’s settings ideally correspond to the simplicity of Konopnicka’s poems and to their rustic atmosphere. This is also the composer’s least sombre song cycle.
