Three Lullabies op. 49
Three Lullabies op. 49 for a cappella choir is another example in Górecki’s oeuvre of the composer’s affinity for bedtime songs. Using traditional lyrics from Hanna Kostyrko’s collection and from Oskar Kolberg’s volumes, Górecki composed his own melodies this time rather than arranging folk originals, as was the case with his other choral songs. The cycle is in the style of simple arrangements of folk melodies. The first and second of the Three Lullabies are typical slow cradle-rocking songs. The third, thanks to the use of a distinct rhythmic ostinato, introduces a slightly different tone upon which the main melody develops. Only toward the end does the lullaby become an undulating, soothing melody, gradually slowing until it stops on the last notes.
