The Adam Mickiewicz Institute in Warsaw addressed a request to Górecki for a composition in 2002 to be performed at the inaugural concert of the Polish Year in Spain, part of Poland’s promotion before the country’s EU accession. As Górecki’s reluctance to accept new commissions was well known, it was agreed that he would prepare a new version of one of his earlier works. He came up with Quasi una fantasia op. 78 – a new version of his String Quartet No. 2 written for a large string ensemble. The composer insisted that his piece should not be called a transcription but a new version, stating that the change of instrumentation alters the sound to such an extent that an entirely new composition is created.

Quasi una fantasia in its new version for great symphony orchestra was first performed on 23 October 2002 in Madrid by the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Gabriel Chmura.
