Mazurkas op. 41
Recording not available.
The two Mazurkas op. 41 are part of a never-completed mazurka cycle. Despite obvious references to folk music, they were to be modelled not so much on Szymanowski’s or Chopin’s works in this genre as on pieces from Messiaen’s cycle Vingt regards sur l’enfant Jésus and their central idea of multiple divisions within the melodic-rhythmic sequences. Eventually Górecki composed only two mazurkas, which have not been publicly performed or printed. Their style, according to musicologist Adrian Thomas, “is more akin to the simple, unadorned style of choral songs that to the triple divisions and meticulous melodic-harmonic details of Szymanowski’s outstanding works in this genre”.
