Lobgesang op. 76
Górecki composed Lobgesang in 2000 a small-scale piece for a cappella choir and glockenspiel for the 600th anniversary of the birth of Johannes Gutenberg, inventor of mechanical-type printing. Less than 10 minutes long, this song of praise is based on psalm texts and continues the series of Górecki’s choral works of religious character. This time, however, the composer opens his piece with extremely expressive calls of “lobet” (“praise”) repeated many times before they give way to delicate, low choral sounds, leading the composition to its final state of calm and solace. The “heavenly” mood of the song’s final section is enhanced by the sound of the glockenspiel.
