Euntes ibant et flebant op. 32
Having completed his monumental Symphony No. 2, Górecki composed smaller-scale pieces including Euntes ibant et flebant for mixed unaccompanied choir, at under 10 minutes. It is a setting of biblical psalms, musically indebted to the suppliant character of religious church songs, including the popular supplication Święty Boże [Holy God]. The focused choral parts, led close to one another, create the illusion of spatial sound as in a church, the incessantly repeated phrase or verse of the melody producing the effect of simple lamentation as in church song. Euntes ibant et flebant was Górecki’s first piece of religious music for a cappella choir, and opened a series of compositions for this ensemble, drawing directly on church music.
