Two Little Songs of Tuwim op. 33
For his daughter Anna’s fifth birthday, in 1972, Górecki set to music two poems for children by Julian Tuwim. Two Little Songs of Tuwim for a choir of four equal voices, dedicated to “Dear Anusia” are: Rok i bieda [The Year and Hardship] and Ptasie plotki [Birds’ Gossip]. The former is calm and rather sad, drawing in character on the kujawiak dance, whereas the latter – fast and joyful – is maintained in krakowiak rhythms. Notably, Tuwim’s poems, including both selected by Górecki, had inspired Lutosławski, who set them for voice and piano for his cycle Six Children’s Songs in 1947.
