For Johnnie op. 79
For Johnnie for violin and piano was Górecki’s last didactic piece for beginning violinists. This time it was composed not for his son, as Three Little Pieces had been, but for his eldest grandson, Jaś, who in 2003 turned 8 and began his regular musical education. The cycle consists of three simple, charming miniatures based on repeated phrases in the violin complemented by accompanying piano. The first two miniatures are calm, the last one lively, with a distinct Tatra Mountain highlander note. During the “marathon” of Górecki’s music on 6 December 2003 in Katowice, organised to celebrate his 70th0th birthday, the miniatures were performed by the work’s dedicatee, Jaś Stańczyk, accompanied by his mother, the composer’s daughter Anna Górecka.
