Amen op. 35
Amen was Górecki’s next composition for unaccompanied choir after Euntes ibant et flebant. Its text consists of 16 repetitions of the word “Amen”. The work is a contemplative prayer demonstrating enormous mental concentration. The overlapping lines of the choral parts, with their long resounding sounds, resonate expressively in a church interior. Created out of profound religious inspiration and characterised by an extremely personal type of expression, Amen can appeal to every listener regardless of his or her religious stance. It wins the hearts of the audience with the simplicity of its musical language and the beauty of its choral sound. The sacred quality in the music is very strongly felt. A desire to represent the sphere of the sacrum in music would soon become a key motive in Górecki’s musical explorations.
