Kraków

Penderecki came to Kraków after his end-of-school exams, with a plan to become a virtuoso violinist. In that city, he realised composition was his true calling. After studies with Artur Malawski and Stanisław Wiechowicz at the State Higher School of Music (now the Academy of Music), he took up teaching and in 1972 was appointed vice chancellor of his alma mater – a post he held for 15 years.
