Form, two-part

Beginning with Symphony No. 2, in which the composer introduced the movements Hésitant (a preparatory, literally “hesitant” part) and Direct (the main part, characterised by directness), this form appears – though without the above terminology – in many other works by Lutosławski. It is a principle that shapes the perception of listeners and the dramaturgy of the work.
