Andrzej Panufnik
Born in 1914, Andrzej Panufnik is one of the eminent 20th-century Polish artists who spent much of their lives abroad due to the political situation in Poland. Feeling creatively enslaved, he left Poland illegally in 1954 and requested asylum in Great Britain. Previously regarded as one of the outstanding representatives of his generation, after his departure Panufnik was proclaimed a traitor by the Polish authorities, and in his new homeland had to build his position from scratch. Although he eventually won recognition there (he was made an honorary member of the Royal Academy of Music, and received a knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II), in his music he never ceased to show his emotional attachment to Poland. Panufnik's works, harmoniously combining emotion and intellect, gradually began to return to Polish concert halls from 1977 onwards. Yet it has still proven difficult for his music to make up for those lost decades.
