Found in the Polish Radio Archives, the recording is entitled Wit Stwosz – Music to a Poem by K.I. Gałczyński Adapted for Radio. The title suggests a link between Panufnik’s composition and a radio programme, but at the same time we have a connection with the music written to the film Wit Stwosz (The Work of Master Stwosz) made in 1951. The musical material of the piece is to a large extent identical with the material of Panufnik’s Gothic Concerto for trumpet and chamber orchestra (Concerto in Modo Antico). It is an excellent example of the varied transformations of a composer’s original idea – in this case the use of quotations from early Polish music.
