  • Original title: Fanfare for Europe
  • year of completion: 1972

  • commission: EEC (European Economic Community)

In 1972, Panufnik composed Fanfare for Europe, a brief, barely one-minute piece for young players. Written to celebrate the establishment of the European Economic Community, the work is based on the notes E-E-C, the organization’s initials. It was commissioned by the Borough of Richmond (as was the cantata Thames Pageant) and premiered in March 1973 in London, though the composer did not include it in the catalogue of his works, probably treating it as an occasional trifle, which has remained in manuscript to this day.
